Small Business Tax Changes, Site C, and Alabama!

December 15th, 2017

This month has been an interesting month, to say the least!

We have major issues happening in the states along with a few game changing situations worth speaking about here at home in Canada! Hats off to an incredibly historic win for the Democrats in the state of Alabama – Poor Roy Moore… at least he can look on the bright side – He’ll be able to deal with his pedophile allegations and the many other outdated views he’s amassed over his lifetime!

Bill Morneau – Small Business Tax Changes

Bill Morneau, Canada’s Federal Finance Minister, will be unveiling his revised tax plan for small businesses shortly before the holiday season! Oh, and the effects of his plan will be retroactive to the upcoming 2018 year, despite little-to-no public consultation on his new proposal. Seems a bit like foie gras, if you ask us – no one wants this new plan shoved down their throats! At any rate, it’ll be great to watch question period when everyone reconvenes in January. Put your hard hat on Morneau, because those questions are going to be flying at you from all angles! … Oh wait… you’ll have your deflective dodge cape on – You’ll be fine, you can always answer the opposition’s questions with another question or talk about how Canadians want whatever you think they may want at the time… Sorry, you don’t speak for the small businesses here in Canada – just sayin’.

John Horgan – Site C Dam Project

And for the most interesting piece of news (happening closest to home in beautiful B.C.), we have our NDP Premier, John Horgan, who’s decided to move forward with the Site C Dam project despite the fact that those who voted NDP, voted for him because he campaigned hard against the project. Yikes – this mudslide is going to be the thing that takes out the NDP in the next election, great job, Horgan… we knew big money and politics would get you too! You can come down off your high horse now and join the rest of the lying politicians.

Check out the Premier’s address to British Columbians below:

Site C and its short-term and long-term impacts for B.C.

Well, we know that the project will create jobs and financially help some First Nations communities, such as the North Indian Band in Northern B.C. (CBC Article found here). We also know that it’ll create enough hydro power to supply the province both over the short- and long- term. We know that this issue is incredibly controversial for the many First Nations bands here in B.C., and we know that the province and B.C. Hydro have committed to utilizing a workforce that will be made up of First Nations men and women to construct the dam and maintain it once it’s built. These are all things that are important, but not the only things that we should be considering.

The NDP’s platform for the Site C Dam project was to stop it in its tracks, send the information off to the Utilities Commission, and get a thorough analysis on its anticipated environmental impacts. The NDP and those who voted NDP were largely against the project, as it infringed on First Nations’ treaty rights and was anticipated to be an ecological disaster for the region and beyond.

The review and and a few issues facing Site C

Site C was reviewed nearly 20 years ago by B.C. and the B.C. Utilities Commission and at that time it was determined to be a no go. It was at this time that the Board saw far more drawbacks than positives for going ahead with Site C. Now, 20 years later, we’re technologically more advanced in wind, solar, and geothermal alternatives, so there is no need to move forward with such a risky endeavor.

Historically, dams of this size have produced incredible ecological issues and have been over budget every time. The project is already slated to go well over budget and has already cost British Columbians nearly $4 billion. The little foundation that they have created for the dam already has structural issues. The ground that the dam is being constructed on is made up of shale, clay, and other sedimentary rock not conducive to hold this monstrous structure. This project is risky at best and flawed and dangerous at worst.

While the job creation and excess power generated by this project may seem important now, over the long term, the dam could have catastrophic impacts on ecological systems and steer the advancement of our alternative energy programs back to hydro-electric energy and away from more progressive forms of energy that have proven to be cleaner, less environmentally cumbersome, and more appropriate given B.C’s complex landscape.

The Day America Broke America – Trump

November 8th, 2017

The Day America Broke America

It’s been just over a full year now since Trump won the election and there is still a lot of world interest in the United States. Specifically, what is going to happen next? It appears that when things take a turn for the worst, they only get worse. We’re not just talking about the natural disasters, but the way in which Trump has responded to all the real crises that has affected the United States, both domestic and abroad.

Trump incites religious extremism in his speeches and has rallied the bullies of the U.S.. He has actively contributed to anti-immigration, anti-gay, and anti-Muslim rhetoric, setting a strong tone of intolerance within his country and afar. One thing that has remained consistent is his disdain for Hillary Clinton. To this day he uses her email scandal as a means for pointing out the “worse-off” alternative to the now-established norm. Deflection is Trump’s primary tactic whenever he gets himself into hot water, which is pretty much a daily occurrence.

Remarkable Tragedy

This man is truly remarkable. He has proven that he can act in any way he chooses, without any real consequences for his actions. Comments and actions that were once believed unfit of someone running for political office, seems to be OK for many Americans now. Here we stand, a year later, with a world-stage laughing stock who fails to unite the country he leads against acts of terrorism, both domestic and abroad.

Russel Howard, one of our favourite comedians, based out of the United Kingdom, recently did a few episodes about gun control in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting, the KKK and white supremacy groups, as well as other very relevant issues affecting the U.S.. Here’s a couple clips we think you’ll enjoy! Russel Howard is inspirational, serious when he has to be, and always succeed at driving home very important messages that we should all be listening to, something we can’t say for everyone!

Russel Howard – Daryl Davis – The man who created the documentary “Accidental Courtesy”

Russel Howard – U.S. Gun Control

In all seriousness, we really need to take a look at America and its position on the world stage. The U.S. is simply not the greatest country in the world and has far more flaws than positive attributes. Many of its people are behind the times, there are civil wars taking place all over the place, and those dealing with oppression aren’t getting any better. When the country and the world looks back on the George W. Bush era and starts to think they did not have it too badly, things start to come into perspective.

As Daryl Davis states in his interview with Russel Howard, Trump is the best thing to happen to America. In some cases you need to break something completely before you can fix it. Davis believes that America will come together like never before to rebuild it in a way that reflects true American values, as they were meant to be. We hope Davis is right, because this tragedy is supposed to last another 3 more years! Bring on the midterm elections and let’s start holding these baboons accountable!

Myanmar – Hell on Earth

October 25th, 2017

Myanmar – Hell on Earth – A Brief History

Rohingya militants attacked security forces on August 25th, resulting in several fatalities. They, with the help of Buddhist nationalist mobs, burned down villages and killed an incredible number of Rohingya. The UN Human Rights Office believes that the military’s actions started prior to August 25th and were intended to drive out the Rohingya from the region.

Rohingya are considered foreigners to Myanmar, despite occupying the Rakhine State for several generations. Because they are labelled foreigners, they are not entitled to citizenship, they are denied basic human rights, and they are subjected to incredible torment and cultural and religious persecution.

What’s Going On

Bob Rae is now Canada’s Special Envoy to Myanmar in an effort to promote accountability for the alleged crimes of the Myanmar government and military forces. Canada and the United Nations have labelled Myanmar’s actions as ethnic cleansing of a minority segment. Over 600,000 Rohihgya have fled to Bangladesh to avoid persecution, torture, and further oppression.

Rohingya girls under the age of 18 years of age account for nearly 50% of all reported rape cases at the Medicins Sans Frontieres Kutupalong Health Facility’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Unit on the border of Bangladesh. This unit is a specialist clinic designed for survivors of sexual assault in Cox’s Bazar.

This health unit is currently treating children under the age of 10 for rape as a result of fleeing the violence in Myanmar. Medicins Sans Frontieres believes that the amount of reported cases is just fraction of those believed to have taken place since August 25th, as most survivors of these brutal assaults face cultural and practical barriers to accessing treatment.

Canadians’ Response to the Crisis

Canadians have voiced their concerns over the crisis and have called on the Canadian Government to revoke the Honorary Citizenship Status that was given to Myanmar’s State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi, over a decade ago.

We hope that Bob Rae’s appointment to this position shines a light on the issues facing Myanmar and what actions might be done to influence the region’s military and government officials from continuing these despicable acts. We hope Canada’s involvement in the region is more than just a report written by Mr. Rae and his staff and a revocation of Suu Kyi’s Citizenship.

The Liberal Tax Reform Plan Step Back

October 19th, 2017

The Liberal Tax Reform Plan Step Back

The Liberals have decided to step back on their ambitious tax reform plan for small businesses this week.

Bill Morneau, the Federal Finance Minister, has been unrelenting up until this point in trying to get his tax reform plan endorsed by Canadians. This has caused a huge problem for the Liberal’s popularity. The plan is terrible and Both Morneau and Trudeau have failed to answer questions during question period in the House. We suspect that Trudeau’s spending problem is directly tied to many of the reasons for this incredible tax reform proposal that impacts Canadian Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Canadian GDP is directly tied to small businesses and we believe that suppressing that growth will ultimately hurt the Canadian economy (go figure!).

What’s Being Done

Today, the government is appealing to the needs of Farmers and Fishers that would have restricted the conversion of income into capital gains. This aspect of the tax plan addresses the impact of what it means when small business owners in these industries seek to pass on their businesses to their children.

Morneau also decided to step back on his passive investment income proposal, which sparked huge controversy with business professionals nation-wide. The Liberals recently introduced a threshold for passive investment income of $50,000 per year to allow small business owners to save for retirement, as well as for other purposes – Thanks friend. We appreciate your ‘generosity’.

In a last-ditch effort to save face, the Liberals decided to stick with one of their campaign promises (We know, it shocked us too!!) and lower the small business tax rate from 10.5% to 9% – The catch is that the full effect won’t take place until 2019. The plan is to lower the tax rate from 10.5% to 10% on January 1st, 2018 and from 10% to 9% on January 1st, 2019.

Our Final Thought

The reason so many small business owners are up in arms over this controversial tax reform plan is because it seeks to harm the very group of Canadians that the Liberals promised to help. Small business owners employ more Canadians than all the largest firms, combined; so why stunt all this growth when the spending problem lies with the Government of Canada? Why make it harder for hardworking Canadians to make a living and save for retirement? Why stifle the ability for small businesses to pivot during tough times? Why make it harder for risk takers to take risk and make ends meet?

These are just some of the questions the Government has failed to answer adequately and Canadians expect more from the Liberals. Start answering your questions during question period and stop being a politician. Accountability is paramount and we expect our government to be ultimately accountable for the promises they make and the rules and regulations they put into action.

The Big 21st Century Satire

October 11th, 2017

The Big 21st Century Satire

Social Conflict Theory is

A Marxist-based social theory which argues that individuals and groups (social classes) within society interact on the basis of conflict rather than consensus.

This Marxist-based theory helps explain why we have so many of the rights we have today. We can thank some pivotal characters who paved the way for tolerance, freedom, and liberty. While we are no where close to where we need to be, we have made huge strides in combating hate displayed by racism, intolerance for sexual orientation, and suppressing women’s rights. With small groups and individuals taking a stand for basic human rights, we’ve gained greater acceptance for other ideological beliefs that fall outside of the once conventional religious norm.

Women’s rights, homophobia, and sexism are just a few of the many social injustices that Nellie McClung, Audre Lorde, Peter Tatchell, and other famous figures stood up to. These figures left a legacy behind them that we benefit from and take for granted every single day, With these productive uprisings, we’ve also seen the effects of unproductive uprisings that have induced hate, deceit, and fear.

Trump has excited the worst in people and has allowed fear, hate, and bigotry to rule the United States of America. Obviously, not all Americans are OK with Trump being their Commander in Chief, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s there because America put him there. When a small group of people stand up for what they believe, in – anything’s possible – including putting an immoral human being into the Oval Office.

We’re sad to see our neighbors in such hardship, especially with all the recent issues that have tried and tested the United States over the last couple of months. Inclement weather, fire storms, domestic terrorism, and white supremacist groups, are just a few of the issues that have plagued the United Sates. It is during these hard times that American values are put to the test and real change occurs; however, when your Commander in Chief puts more time into his twitter campaigns about the National Football League and corporate taxes, instead of rallying the communities affected by these incredible tragedies, there’s something seriously wrong.

While it may only take one person or a small group of passionate individuals to change the world, it takes just as few to destroy it. We’re closely watching the impeachment meter and hope that the United States of America decides this reality TV star is unfit to be president.

Here’s a clip we found interesting, that we’re sure you’ll enjoy too!

Fargo the CEO!

October 4th, 2017

Fargo the CEO!

Elizabeth Warren, the US Senator who called for the firing of the previous Wells Fargo CEO, is now asking for the resignation of Tim Sloan, the current CEO of Wells Fargo. In her words, “Wells Fargo is not going to change with you in charge”.

With the fine levied last year at $180M and the firm’s agreement to pay $140M to settle a class action lawsuit, you’d think the bank would have implemented measures to fundamentally change the way they do business, but it seems as though it’s just not doing enough!

Wells Fargo admitted in August this year that approximately 3.5 million accounts may have been created for customers without their knowledge or permission over the course of 8 years, more than what the bank previously stated.

Tim Sloan stated that the most serious issues were limited to the retail banking unit.

We’ll see how this story develops over the coming weeks and months!

That, the President of the United States is able to compare disasters and tragedies, for those of you that did not know, is a special privilege of the Office of the United States. The U.S. President just compared the tragic natural disaster and death count in Puerto Rico to the disaster that occurred as a result of Hurricane Katrina… Why not line up all the victims of the tragedy and slap them across the face, Trump? Oh wait… you kind of already did that. Good move Dumpty!

Trudeau Ups Taxes, Scheerly He Shouldn’t!

September 27th, 2017

Trudeau Ups Taxes, Scheerly He Shouldn’t!

Anderew Scheer, Leader of the Conservatives and Official Opposition Leader, is taking a stand against Trudeau’s Tax Plan to tax small business owners who are “not paying their fair share of taxes”. This one hits home for us here at Fancy Dough, because unlike Trudeau, we’ve had to work very hard to make ends meet, while the silver spoon is still permanently affixed to his lips.

Despite this being a personal topic for us and the majority of small businesses across Canada, we wanted to weigh in on some of these proposed changes and review some of the ways Trudeau is being “open and transparent” about his proposed changes and justification for such egregious measures.

We’ll open this week’s post with a video of Andrew Scheer asking Trudeau and the Liberal Government to explain how these tax measures are benefiting the middle class. You’ll notice a theme to Mr. Trudeaus answers, but before we spill the coffers on this vid, check out this question period…

The theme of the question period is avoidance. Trudeau dodges Scheer’s questions and fails to address any of the issues appropriately. Canadians expect their Prime Minister to answer questions in Question Period posed by the opposition, as a fundamental characteristic of a strong democracy. These values were the values Trudeau was elected on and we expect him to fully explain his policies so that Canadians across Canada can understand exactly what’s at stake.

Check out more details on this and more by checking out this CTV Article here.

The Liberal Tax Plan

What does the Liberal tax plan change?

Income Sprinkling –

It makes it more difficult to “split” income to family members in the form of salary, wages, or dividends to reduce the overall taxes paid by the whole family unit. The proposal seeks to put restrictions on family members between the ages of 18 and 24.

Changes to taxation on passive business income –

Restricts the ability to leave “excess” earnings inside a corporation to grow in what would be deemed a “passive investment portfolio”.

Close “loopholes” that convert income into capital gains –

Income that “should” be taxed as salary or dividends is not easily able to be converted to capital gains (taxed at a much lower tax rates).

Summary

The Liberals believe that certain taxpayers are not paying their fair share of taxes when they use corporations to “hide” earnings or disperse them using “loopholes” currently prevalent within our tax system.

The problem with the Liberal Tax Changes is not that they want to revamp the system; the problem is that they wholeheartedly believe that small businesses and other corporations do not pay their fair share of taxes. Small business owners not only sacrifice their own personal finances and also their credit worthiness to become entrepreneurs and employ others, but they are often times the last people to get paid.

Small business owners don’t have pensions that they will draw from once they retire, nor do they have extended medical insurance offered by private corporations. They also have to put their own personal assets on the line to take risks to employ others who get to have a secure job that pays them “dividends” that owners simply do not get.

Missile Launch, Sarah Palin + More

North Korea and Their Missile Launch at (or around) Japan

Ballistic Missile
A ballistic rocket is test-fired through a precision control guidance system in this undated photo released by North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) May 30, 2017. KCNA/via REUTERS.

We feel like we say this a lot, but GOOD GRIEF!

According to the BBC, Pyongyang says “it is being provoked by U.S.-South Korea military exercises which it says are a rehearsal for invasion.”

If you recall from one of our earlier posts, we made reference to the fact that North Korea was not going to be happy about the scheduled exercise between South Korea and the U.S.. North Korea’s feathers have been a bit ruffled since these drills commenced, sending a missile over Northern Japan in an attempt to communicate their displeasure. We’re not so sure that was the best move.

According to CNBC, the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, had this response after he was asked what actions his government planned to take as a result of the missile launch:

The ballistic missile launched by North Korea flew over our nation and landed in the Pacific Ocean. We, as the government, were completely aware of the movement of the missile since immediately after its launch and in order to protect the public we had a well prepared system in place.

This reckless act of firing a missile over our nation is an unprecedented, serious and significant threat, one that seriously diminishes the peace and safety of the region, and as a result we have lodged a firm protest against North Korea.

We have also requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. By working together with the international community, we will seek to further strengthen pressure against North Korea.

Under the firm Japan-U.S. Alliance, so that we can deal with any circumstance, while maintaining a sense of tension, we will do our utmost to ensure the public’s safety.

Trump responded by stating that “all options” were on the table, as their recent missile launch signals “contempt” for its neighbors and the United Nations.

We found this very useful video for anyone looking to get a few tid bits of history under their belt. Enjoy!

Now that we’ve got that off our chest, let’s move on to something a bit more comical. Turn that frown upside down because we’ve got Sarah Palin to talk about! No, we’re not talking about her questionable intelligence level, we’re talking about the fact that her defamation case got thrown out against the New York Times!

Definitely not Defamed… According to the Law

Oh Palin… where to start… oh right! We’re talking ONLY about your defamation suit. For those of you who don’t know, Sarah Palin launched a defamation lawsuit against the New York Times.

According to the New York times, this suit was launched after a Times editorial was published earlier this year after a gunman opened fire on Republican congressmen during baseball practice in Washington DC.

The Times editorial, in discussing links between violence and “heated political rhetoric” cited a map published by Mrs. Palin’s political action committee, which it said featured crosshairs “targeting” 20 Democratic politicians.

While an error was made in the editorial, the New York Times quickly corrected their inaccuracies. It was determined that no malicious intent could be proven to demonstrate that defamation occurred. Judge Jed Rakoff stated the following in his final decision, “Negligence this may be; but defamation of a public figure it plainly is not”.

Here’s a video from Newsy that describes the controversy perfectly!

A Perfect Storm, Pardon my Sherrif?

Pardon
Pardon

Covered by the rainy mists of the most devastating hurricane to hit the U.S. since Hurricane Katrina, President Trump chose to pardon Joe Arpaio over a misdemeanor that would have landed the former Sherrif behind bars for up to 6 months; however, Trump had different plans. Trump is being ridiculed for his decision to pardon the former Arizona Sherrif by many prominent figures, including Paul Ryan, Jeff Flake, John McCain, and Jeb Bush.

To make matters worse, Mr. Arpaio did not submit an application to be pardoned, he has not been sentenced, and his pardon was for a  minor offense.

Mr. Arpaio’s Lawyer, Jack Wilenchick believes that criticizing his pardon is wrong because he was unfairly prosecuted, with no jury.

Law professors in the U.S. have concluded that this might just be the thing that gets The Donald impeached… Stay tuned!

Hold, on… we need to fill up our popcorn bowl!

Ok, we’re back… What’s next… AH YES!, let’s talk about the legal challenges of the controversial U.S. military transgender ban.

Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That

President Trump’s actions immediately caused the individual plaintiffs and other transgender service members to fear for their careers, the well-being of their family members and dependents, their health care and, in some cases, their safety, the ACLU lawsuit states.

This is just one point of view that is shared across the country for current, past, and future transgendered military personnel who feel discriminated against for something they cannot control. Lawsuits have been launched all over the country after Trump declared that,

[the U.S. military] cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.

A Train Wreck

Donald Trump’s judgement is not always sound (sorry, while we put ourselves together) and here’s another piece of evidence to support this statement…

As we are all aware, Donald Trump has been under fire lately for his “denouncing” of the Charlottesville attacks that took place over the last week. Trump, under pressure from literally everyone, took to the media to reconfirm and “reaffirm” his stance on white supremacist groups and neo-Nazis.

With all this blowing up in his face, the president thought it would be appropriate to retweet a photo of a train hitting a cartoon person covered by a CNN logo…

Good grief, Donald. Good grief.

So now you’re ok with people being run over by trains, if they work for CNN? What were you trying to say with your early morning tweet? We know you deleted it, but unfortunately whatever you put online can’t ever be permanently deleted. Maybe consult Barron, your youngest son, who’s probably more adept at technology and can show you how things work when you post something, and try to imagine that it never existed…

Again… once more for the crowd… GOOD GRIEF!

Another One Bites the Dust

Trump’s advisory council is quickly being depleted of CEOs who are taking a stand against Trump’s poor condemnation of the Charlottesville violence. Here’s the list of executives who have left and made statements of their own:

  • Kevin Plank, Under Armour CEO
  • Ken Frazier, Merck Pharmaceuticals CEO
  • Scott Paul, Alliance for American Manufacturing President
  • Brian Krzanich, Intel CEO

Here’s a link to the full BBC article here.

Let’s move on to something a bit more positive…

Suspended… At Least for Now

In another unsurprising turn of events, last week Trump sent another ‘clear’ or damaging message to the North Korean Regime in an attempt to demonstrate intolerance to the threats that they’ve been making to the United States.

The regime has since ceased their plans to send a military warning strike to the waters off the coast of Guam. It appears that Trump’s bombastic tactics are at least meeting the level of crazy prevalent within the Regime, as North Korea seems to be at bay… for now.

Kim Jung Un stated that he will watch the “Foolish conduct of the Yankees” before making his next move.

It’s clear that neither side truly wants to have a full out open war, especially since it will likely end up becoming the start of another world war.

The US and South Korea still plan to conduct their planned military drills off the coast of South Korea next week, so stay tuned…

Grappling with a Groping Problem?

Taylor Swift has received vindication after winning her countersuit against now-fired Denver DJ, David Mueller. The countersuit was in the amount of $1 and a gesture of solidarity for all women out there dealing with sexual abuse. A jury determined that Taylor Swift was assaulted by Mr. Mueller, with the jury determining that he grabbed Taylor’s backside during a backstage meet and greet.

Mueller had originally sued Swift for $3 million US for ruining his career after Swift’s mother and radio liaison were within their rights to contact Mueller’s bosses about the situation.

The judge was quick to announce that Mueller, if the Jury sided with his side of the events, would only be entitled to $300,000 (two year’s salary).

British Columbia, Canada, Ends Grizzly Trophy Hunting

No Paws, Heads, Furs, etc… can be taken out of the province, so if you’re looking to hunt some Grizzlies in British Columbia, Canada, you may do so only for their meat.

The newly formed NDP/Green Government here in B.C., Canada announced that starting next season (November 2017) Grizzly Bears will no longer be hunted for anything other than their meat. The problem is not with their numbers, as approximately 250 are killed each year, but rather the barbaric practice itself.

Activist groups stated that this is a step in the right direction, but that there may be ‘loopholes’ that may still need to be fixed, as hunting for these animals may still see trophy hunters hunting them for sport.

The government believes there are no loopholes, and that the rules behind hunting Grizzlies in B.C. is very clear going into 2018.

Lost: Moral Compass. If Found, Please Return

Derek Filderbrandt, an Alberta politician who has made his career out of holding governments accountable for their spending, is now under fire for double dipping on his own meal expenses. On top of receiving $2,555 in tax payer benefits, he also made mistakes when he wrongly billed the government for meals over several years. Filderbrandt blames this on administrative errors, despite the fact that this has been a hot topic in the media for quite some time now – Mike Duffy, Patrick Brazeau, Pamela Wallin, etc…

Real News – Finally “Reported” Thanks to Donald Trump TV

Well, on Monday, President Trump decided to fight CNN and other widely-known news agencies with his very own “real news” show! It’s very hard for me to write that without feeling a bit nauseous. Here is a link to his Facebook page where you can catch up on all the latest Trump propaganda. Oh – By the way… Trump doesn’t report on anything scandalous within his own administration, so if you’re looking for the real news on that, you’ll need to head back to CNN or the New York Times.

Oh… we’re not done yet! The best part is that Kayleigh McEnany is the “News” Anchor! If you’re not familiar with this lovely woman, you’ll probably remember her from episodes of CNN where she defended Donald Trump and his brand of crazy. We think this will be some great morning entertainment to go along with your morning java!

Stay tuned… we’re going to be watching Trump’s page closely, as he reports on the “real news”!

Just in case you were wondering what the purpose of the ‘real news’ show vs. the mainstream news, here’s this clip!

Aaron Carter
Aaron Carter

Moving on to something a bit more interesting than US Politics, Aaron Carter came out this week as Bi-Sexual. Remember the dancing, singing, boy crush from the 1990’s (viewed in the pic above)? Well, he’s taken to twitter to let everyone know that he’s liked boys and girls since he was 13. At age 17 he had his first experience with a boy.

Aaron posted this on Twitter,

“There’s something I’d like to say that I feel is important for myself and my identity that has been weighing on my chest for nearly half of my life,” Carter wrote. “This doesn’t bring me shame, just a weight and burden I have held onto for a long time that I would like lifted off me.”

We love hearing when people come into their own – Good on ya, Aaron! Check out CNN’s full article here.

While it’s not as interesting as Star Wars, Google’s dealing with a problem of its own!

We’ve all heard about the tech industry trying to do a better job of diversifying their workforce, as the vast majority of their coders and leadership team are white or Asian males. Well… One software engineer decided to memo out his feelings on the situation and provide his own rational as to why women are not in leadership positions or prevalent in the tech industry.

He wrote,

“Distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership,”

Suffice to say, pointing the finger at biological reasons and drawing conclusions based on stereotypical reasoning didn’t work out for this gent! Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, and newly appointed Head of Diversity, Danielle Brown, weighed in on the employee’s memo, stating that his views don’t represent the company’s perspective in any way shape or form. Danielle wrote a memo to all employees, where she said,

“Part of building an open, inclusive environment means fostering a culture in which those with alternative views, including different political views, feel safe sharing their opinions.”

“But that discourse needs to work alongside the principles of equal employment found in our code of conduct, policies, and anti-discrimination laws.”

In addition to the responses crafted by Mr. Pichai and Ms. Brown, other executives of the organization denounced the employee’s essay. The employee was later fired for his essay and discriminatory views.

Kill it with Fire!

Wasp Nest

Do you hate those yellow flying things that infiltrate everything at the most inopportune time? Wasps are one of the most annoying pests of all! We’re so glad we found someone who feels the same way we do. In fact, a homeowner in Thunder Bay, Ontario burnt his house down in an effort to get rid of a wasp nest!

Fire crews were called to the scene of the incident after he doused the nest with gasoline and set it on fire. Don’t worry man, we completely identify with this situation. You did the right thing ?.

… This section of the blog wouldn’t be complete without a responsible message:

John Kaplanis, the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue District Chief, said,

“Applying gas and lighting it would not be recommended at any time,” he said. “Things can go wrong in a hurry.” ?
